Wm to H'ry, March 14, 1904. Age: 62

Wm is moved by the death of a friend to contemplate a change in attitude:

"But the sense of shortcomings seems an inevitable companion of death and makes me resolve that you and I shall hereafter abound and super-abound in every form of flattery and affectionate demonstration, blind to evil, seeing nothing but good, giving credit for ten times more than we see and laying aside that grudging, carping, and critical attitude which Alice says is the moral keynote of the James family."
