"[President] Eliot made a long call on Alice the other day when I was too ill to see him, and said for certain reasons they did not want me to go on the retired list, but that I could draw pay equivalent to retiring allowance on the Gurney foundation, and take it out in writing and not in teaching.  This of course would be a very fine arrangement..."
