W^m has very specific thoughts about a recent companion, social activist Elizabeth Glendower Evans (the widow of one of his students):

"She is an absolutely amiable woman, but fitted for a heroic life exclusively and scuffs away every common remark and consideration in a way so curt that it dries one up.  Were some great work on hand, revolution, siege, or shipwreck, she'd take the lead as a duck takes to water, without an effort or an interfering thought."
