Wm weighs the plusses and minuses of a social life in the days before the telephone:

"Of course the social interruptions are the worst thing as a man grows older, and I'm amused to find how I resent the few evening callers who come in here.  If one has strength of mind to do what one will, one can deny oneself.  But one generally I fear does so with a half heart, because one fears to lose some chance of a remunerative visit."
