Impressed by Kipling's early work, Wm sours on him now:
"I confess that my hopes as to the Shakespeare-like greatness of his future have been dashed by reading his American Notes at Tweedies. They are autobiographic and reveal such a blackguard soul that I find it about impossible to believe in his ever mellowing into an all-round taker in of life, or a perfect artist."
