In the early correspondence, H'ry used to like to say that words tended to fail -- but not in his description of Sister Alice's demise (she did not go slowly):
"They were infinitely pathetic &, to me, most unspeakable hours. They would have been intolerable if it had not been so evident that all the hideous burden of suffering consciousness was utterly gone. As it is they were the most appealing & pitiful thing I ever saw. But I have seen, happily, but little death immediately."
